Nigeria Opens Bidding Round for 40 Oil and Gas Blocks

Nigeria has launched a bidding round for 40 oil and gas blocks, with the NUPRC confirming that mandatory beneficial ownership disclosure will apply to all participants.

Nigeria has commenced a licensing exercise offering 40 oil and gas blocks, opening up new acreage for upstream exploration and development. The initiative aims to stimulate activity across the country's energy sector by making fresh opportunities available to prospective commercial operators.

Speaking on Tuesday, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, head of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), confirmed that the 2026 round will introduce enhanced transparency rules. Under the regulatory guidelines outlined for the process, all bidding entities will be subject to the mandatory disclosure of their beneficial owners before awards are concluded.

For offshore contractors, vessel operators, and technical procurement teams, the allocation of these blocks indicates pipeline demand for marine assets and specialised equipment. Although licensing exercises take time to mature, subsequent field assessment and exploration phases will ultimately require support vessels, drilling supplies, and associated marine logistics.
