Nigerian Regulator Reclaims Over 50 Fallow Oil Fields Under Drill-or-Drop Policy
Nigeria's upstream regulator has retrieved more than 50 dormant oil fields under the Petroleum Industry Act to facilitate fresh development.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has recovered more than 50 fallow oil fields from defaulting licence holders. The regulatory intervention follows the enforcement of acreage management provisions established under the country's Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The regulator has reaffirmed its commitment to a strict "drill-or-drop" policy, targeting licensed areas that have been left inactive by awardees. By reclaiming these dormant blocks, the government aims to open the acreage for fresh exploration and development, curbing inactivity across the upstream sector.
For offshore contractors, vessel operators, and procurement teams, the eventual reallocation of these fields could signal a pipeline of new operational activity. The reactivation of dormant acreage is expected to drive demand for offshore support vessels, drilling assets, and technical procurement services as new programmes take shape.
